Masquerade Volunteering

Be a part of the magic that is the Worldcon Masquerade—so many meaningful ways to help, from masquerade pre-registration on and to vital roles backstage and in front of the stage during the run of the show on ! Masquerade Pre-Registration Desk

Volunteers are needed to man the registration table for the masquerade, collect forms from contestants and answer basic questions (a full brief will be provided). Table helpers can sign up for a one-hour shift, help with multiple hours together, or spread out their volunteer time over and . Helpers are needed at the Masquerade Registration Table from and .

Den Moms and Den Assistants

Den Moms and Den Assistants work backstage during the masquerade, assisting a small group of contestants assigned to them. They make sure contestants are ready to go on, stay hydrated, and get to workmanship judging. They remain available to assist the costumers, be a calming presence, and problem-solve as needed. Self starters, caring, empathetic people with an eye for detail are highly valued for these jobs. Don’t let the name fool you—guys make great Den Moms too!

Catchers

This vital safety precaution involves seating sharp-eyed volunteers directly in front of the stage to make sure contestants do not get too close to the edge and topple off. They are poised on both sides of the center exit stairs to safely assist costumed contestants safely down the stairs so that there are no slip, trips or falls. Spry, strong younger people are invaluable for this vital job. which puts you in the absolute best place to see the costumes up close. Catchers are needed from to the end of the show on , but some catchers are needed during the day for rehearsals from in Ballroom 3.

Photography Escorts

Once the contestants have completed their performance and have exited the stage, volunteers are needed to guide contestants safely through the darkened ballroom to the main media photography location out in the lobby. Photography escorts are needed from until the end of the costume presentations on evening.

Stage Crew

Strong men and women, 16 years and up are sought to assist as stage crew for the masquerade. You will pre-set props and remove them after a presentation, assist getting large, awkward costumes safely up onto the stage, etc. The ability to work quietly and take directions well are essential. Stage crew are needed throughout the day on from (you may not be needed all day), and then back for the main show from until the masquerade ends.
