From sleek cybernetic augments to magical tools and high-tech instruments, we want to see your best work. Open to makers of all skill levels. Bring your visions to life and show us what your hands—and your imagination—can create!
Classes:
Hand-held Device (Non-weapon)—a fictitious tool (NOT a weapon) that is to be used or operated while being held in the hand or hands. Examples of fictional hand-held devices include: Sonic Screwdriver, PKE Meter, Tricorder, Neuralyzer, Hitchhiker’s Electronic Thumb, Max’s Shoe Phone.
Wearable Prosthetic Device—a fictitious device worn on the body, designed to replace or augment a body part or function. Examples of fictional prosthetic devices: Geordi’s Visor, Miranda’s sensor web, Doc Ock’s appendages. Battlefield Earth’s Breathers. Those steel teeth from James Bond. Mechanical hands in Everfair. Tony Stark’s MK1.
Guidelines:
- Hand-held Devices should be no larger than 12 inches by 12 inches by 12 inches.
- Wearable Prosthetic Devices should be modeled by a person if possible. Replacement prosthetics should be of a size appropriate to the body part they replace.
- Use of store-brought props is discouraged but not disallowed. The finished prop must be significantly modified in form or appearance; a “before” picture will be required.
- Extra points will be awarded for accessories, attachments, moving parts, lights, sounds.
- Each device should have a story behind it. What does it do? How does it work? When & where was it invented? Is it widely available, or unique? Easy to use, or difficult? Reliable, or janky? Legal, or illicit? Et cetera?

Show and Judging
Come present your prop to the judges, who will be available in the Terrace Lounge on , from to Judging will close at sharp, so come early! Winners will be announced after close of judging. The two Best Device winners will be eligible to present their winning props on stage during the Masquerade! Winner’s certificates will be available for pick-up at the convention Information Desk by Friday morning.
