Around Seattle: Leavenworth

Just north and east of Seattle is one of the most unique towns in our region. Leavenworth, on Stevens Pass on Highway 2, is a charming little village decorated in Bavarian style. Leavenworth is a great place to visit whether you’re looking to hike, river raft, shop, drink some fine beverages, have a feast—or all of the above. The town has the unmistakable charm of a European getaway without ever having to leave the state.

When the snow melts and the mountains turn lush and green, Leavenworth becomes a playground for outdoor enthusiasts and casual wanderers alike. The town is famous for its alpine-style architecture, flower-filled window boxes, and cobblestone streets lined with shops offering everything from handmade chocolates to authentic German steins. Strolling through town feels like stepping into another world, one where polka music drifts from beer gardens and the scent of bratwurst and freshly baked pretzels fills the air.

But Leavenworth is more than just a picturesque village—it’s an adventurer’s dream in the summer months. Hiking and nature walks are a must, with trails leading to jaw-dropping views of the surrounding mountains and valleys. Icicle Gorge Trail offers a leisurely yet stunning riverside hike, while more ambitious trekkers can take on Colchuck Lake, where glacier-fed waters sparkle in a breathtaking shade of turquoise.

For water lovers, the Wenatchee River provides endless fun. Whether you’re paddling in a kayak, floating leisurely on a tube, or taking on the thrill of whitewater rafting, the cool, clear water offers the perfect way to beat the summer heat. Local waterfront parks like Enchantment Park and Waterfront Park give visitors space to picnic, play, and take in the serene beauty of the area after a day on the water.

Leavenworth’s outdoor concerts and festivals bring an extra dash of excitement to summer weekends. Throughout the season, you can catch live performances in the town square, sip craft beer at one of the local breweries, or enjoy a glass of Washington wine while relaxing in an open-air tasting room. On weekends, the Leavenworth Community Farmers Market offers an opportunity to pick up local crafts and produce. We recommend fresh Rainier cherries!

Speaking of food, summer is the perfect time to indulge in Bavarian and Northwestern flavors. Grab a bratwurst topped with sauerkraut, enjoy a heaping plate of schnitzel, or cool off with handcrafted ice cream or fresh fruit from a nearby orchard. Local eateries often serve up farm-to-table meals that highlight our region’s flavors.

Whether you’re exploring the charming village streets, hiking into the heart of the Cascades, or simply lounging in the sun with a stein of beer, Leavenworth offers a summer experience unlike any other. It’s a place that seamlessly blends adventure, relaxation, and old-world charm. Leavenworth is just about two hours drive from the city, but feels like it’s a continent away.
