If you lived in the Northwest in the 80s, you can probably still sing Sea Galley’s catchy “We’ve Got Crab Legs!” jingle. The ad was in constant rotation and featured a trio of chefs who, as the camera pulled back, proclaimed “We’ve got crab legs!” and are revealed to be wearing crab leg costumes to the waist. The crab-legged, high-kicking chefs dance their way out of the restaurant and into local legend. It’s said that the concept for the ad was the brainchild of some actual Sea Galley chefs at one of the restaurants. Unfortunately, the only version available online is so low definition as to be painful to watch. If you want to give it a shot anyway, check it out!
At an early Norwescon in the 1980s, I borrowed three sets of crab legs from a Sea Galley manager in the Seattle area — and marched out on stage to emcee the masquerade wearing them, along with two other people. Somewhere, there must be a photo. But yes, crab-legs-as-leggings was a big deal back then.
